If your surgeon has mentioned laser-assisted cataract surgery, you might be picturing the laser doing the entire operation. In reality, the femtosecond laser performs a handful of specific, delicate steps with remarkable precision, while your surgeon guides the procedure from start to finish. Here is exactly what the laser does, and why it can matter.
Before the laser does anything, it captures a high-resolution image of your eye. That map lets the system plan each step to your eye's exact measurements, rather than relying on the hand and eye alone.
The laser can create the tiny, self-sealing incisions used to access the lens, placed precisely where planned.
It opens the front of the lens capsule (the thin membrane around your cataract) in a near-perfect circle. A well-centered opening helps the new lens sit exactly where it should, which is especially important for premium lenses.
The laser can segment and soften the cataract before removal. That can mean less ultrasound energy is needed inside the eye during the procedure.
For eyes with astigmatism, the laser can make precise corneal adjustments to reduce it, sharpening the final result.
The laser does not remove the cataract or insert the new lens; your surgeon does that. It also is not automatically part of every surgery. It is one tool, chosen when it will genuinely help.
These steps are where accuracy pays off, particularly when you are correcting astigmatism or placing a premium, astigmatism-correcting, or extended-depth-of-focus lens. That is why laser assistance and premium lenses often go together.
Whether the laser is used is a decision Dr. A. Vijay Mudgil makes with you at your consultation, based on what will benefit your eyes and the lens you choose. Standard cataract surgery is performed without the laser and remains an excellent, proven option. Learn more on our cataract surgery and advanced cataract surgery pages.
